Delhi – Agra – Delhi by Coach (B)

The Taj Mahal was built by the third Mughal emperor of India, Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth. Although it is not known for sure who planned the Taj Mahal, the name of an Indian architect of Persian descent, Ustad Ahmad Lahori, has been cited in many sources. As soon as construction began in 1630, masons, craftsmen, sculptors, and calligraphers were summoned from Persia, the Ottoman Empire, and Europe to work on the masterpiece. It took 12 years of hard labour and 20,000 labourers to build the mausoleum.

  • Morning (0800 hrs) visit the world famous Taj Mahal built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan in 1630 for his queen Mumtaz Mahal to enshrine her mortal remains (Taj Mahal closed on Fridays)
  • Afternoon (1400 hrs) visit the Agra Fort near the gardens of the Taj Mahal stands the important 16th-century Mughal monument known as the Red Fort of Agra. This powerful fortress of red sandstone encompasses, within its 2.5-km-long enclosure walls, the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. It comprises many fairy-tale palaces, such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, built by Shah Jahan; audience halls, such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and two very beautiful mosques.

Dharamshala – Amritsar By Coach (B)

  • Morning (0800 hrs) drive to Amritsar (205 km / approx 5 hrs drive)
  • Upon arrival, check-in at the hotel.
  • Afternoon visit Golden Temple-the sacred Sikh sanctuary, marbled, bronzed and covered with gold leaf wherein the Guru Granth Sahib-the Bible of the Sikhs is placed reverently. Also see the community kitchen where 10000 pilgrims are fed daily on voluntary and complimentary basis, the historic Jallianwala Bagh where Gen. Dyer’s bullets killed scores of innocent Indians and the beautiful Ram Bagh Gardens.
  • Evening proceed to visit Wagah Border. Located on the Indo-Pakistan border, Wagah is 28 kms from the Amritsar main town. A good number of visitors come to this place to see the change of guards ceremony and the flag hoisting and lowering activities which are done with great skill and precision by the border security forces of both the countries. A site you cannot afford to miss.

  • LAMAYURU:The oldest holy site in Ladakh, it was a Bon shrine prior to the advent of Buddhism. Also known as Yun Drung (Swastika) it is sighted on a high promontory overlooking the village and valley. For sheer spectacle value no other gompa can match.

  • Morning full day sightseeing with guide and pack lunch to HEMIS, THIKSEY, SHEY and STOK monasteries.
  • SHEY:Situated on a hillock 15 km. upstream from Leh was once the residence of the royal family. According to tradition, it was the seat of power of the pre-Tidetan kings. A 7.5 meter high copper status of Buddha, plated with gold and the largest of its kind is installed here.
  • THIKSE:Spectacularly sighted, Thikse is one of the largest and architecturally most impressive gompa. There are several temples in this gompa, containing images stupas and wall painting of Buddhas which are exquisite.
  • HEMIS:It is the wealthiest, best known and biggest gompa in Ladakh. Its popularity stems from the major annual festival held here in summer. The festival is in honour of Guru Padma Sambhav’s birth anniversary. It also has the largest Thanka, which is unfurled once in 12 years (next in 2004). Hemis was built in 1630 during the reign of Sengge Namgyal, an illustrious rulers in Ladakh. It flourished under the Namgyal dynasty for the royalty favoured for Drugkpa Sect, which managed the monastery.
    It is divided into two, the Assembly Hall on the right and the main temple on the left. The hall, Dukhang, is also used as a ‘Green Room’ by the dancer during the festival. The temple is known as Tshogkhang. The verandahs have a surfeit of frescoes among them the Buddhist Wheel of Life (Kalachakra) and the Lord of the four quarters, besides rows of the prayer wheels.
  • STOK:Visible in the distance, at the top of a huge moraine of pebbles swept down from the mountains, the elegant four – story STOK Palace stands above barley terraces studded with threshing circles and whitewashed farmhouses. Built early in the nineteenth century by the last ruler of the independent Ladakh.

  • Morning sightseeing with guide and pack lunch to Alchi monastery & Likir monastery.
    ALCHI:On the banks of the Indus is the Alchi gompa, dating a thousand years back. One of its walls feature thousands of miniature-sized pictures of the Buddha. Three large sized images made on clay and painted brightly are its focal attraction. No longer an active religious center, it is looked after by monks from the Likir monastery.
  • LIKIR:Founded in the 11th century and rededicated to a different monastic order in the 15th century, its earlier gompa was destroyed in a fire. The present gompa dates back to the 18th century. Skilled craftsmen producing excellent Thankas, earthen pots and carved folding wooden tables. Majestically situated, Likir commands a spectacular view. A magnificent giant juniper tree, one of the few survivors of its species stands in the courtyard.
